Shakti is a national not-for-profit community organisation working in the area of domestic/family violence intervention, prevention and awareness. They provide specialist support services for women, children and families of Asia, African and Middle Eastern origin. In 2013 they partnered with the Ministry of Social Development's 'It's not OK' campaign to release a special booklet aimed at raising awareness about cross cultural family relationships. The booklet will be published in English and translated into Mandarin, Hindi and Farsi.

I was approached to partner with Shakti to provide the images to accompany the booklet. In the process, I photographed people of all ages and backgrounds in a range of locations, from bus stops to band practices.

You can download the full booklet here. Click here to read more about the amazing work Shakti does.

The release of the booklet was covered by numerous news outlets, including New Zealand Herald, Stuff NZTVNZ and Beehive.

It was an absolute blast having Rachel as the photographer for our project! She made everybody feel comfortable in front of the camera, which is not an easy task! She was very professional, easy to work with and incredibly patient. Shakti used her beautiful and powerful images in a booklet about family and domestic violence in ethnic communities. I highly recommend her and I would definitely like to work with her on our next projects!
